The performance of metal building systems in earthquakes has been excellent over the years because metal buildings are strong, flexible and light. The low mass and high ductility provides some of the intrinsic qualities that enhance their resistance to seismic action. This article—written by W. Lee Shoemaker, P.E., Ph.D., of the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) and posted on the association’s website—looks at the performance of metal building systems in California earthquakes spanning more than two decades. It also talks about ongoing research to make metal buildings the construction method of choice for low-rise buildings in areas of high seismicity.
