This collaborative article, written by William A. Miller, Ph.D., P.E., of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL); Danny S. Parker of the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC); and Hashem Akbari, Ph.D. of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), looks at how weathering affects the solar reflectance and infrared emittance of metal roofs. The purpose of the study was to determine whether metal roofing can reduce the energy used for comfort cooling and heating in residential and commercial buildings. The research was commissioned by the Cool Metal Roofing Coalition on behalf of the entire metal construction industry. The report is 13 pages long and includes numerous charts, photos and graphs.
