St. Elizabeth Seton Gymnasium
Morin Roof Panels Play Key Role In Gymnasium's Innovative Design
Morin, a Kingspan Group Company, contributed its single element Standing Seam Series Panels fabricated from Galvalume® to the recently-completed St. Elizabeth Seton Gymnasium in Oakland, CA. The 10,400 square-foot gym doubles as a community room and was designed to complement the aesthetics of the neighboring church sanctuary.
Building the $4.6 million gym for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland presented a variety of challenges from the ground-up. Fortunately, the project team brought its attention to detail to the site, ready to meticulously tackle the job.
“The St. Elizabeth Seton Gymnasium design was complex because the community wanted a building that didn’t look like a gym,” explains Architect of Record John Miller of John Miller Architects. “The narrow project site and the need to complement the sanctuary’s design also posed restrictions on the construction process.”
To address these challenges, John Miller Architects opted to “cant the walls inward and create a series of chevron patterns that undulated in and out.” Nearly 9,000 square feet of Morin SWL-18 standing seam sloped panels with attached mock batten seam covers formed the visually-pleasing building envelope. Complete with a weather-resistant Spartan Bronze finish, the watertight, sustainable facility meets each of the project parameters.
Morin standing seam profiles are engineered to accommodate thermal movement – an important consideration in the metal roofing industry and a common cause of metal roof leaks. The panels are also periodically tested to supply architects and engineers with technical support for a changing environment.
Miller confirms, “The key to the success of the St. Elizabeth Seton Gymnasium was the contractor’s meticulous execution coupled with the use of Morin panels.”
In addition to John Miller Architects of Mountain View, CA, the project team included general contractor TBI Construction, San Jose, CA, and installer Ray L. Hellwig Mechanical, Santa Clara, CA.
