Morris Sato Studio Selects Follansbee® Steel For New Shelter Island Residences
TCS Satin™ terne-coated stainless steel from Follansbee® is featured on two new residential properties located in Shelter Island at the east end of Long Island, NY. The soft gray finish of TCS Satin offers a unique look with long-lasting appeal for the contemporary residences designed by internationally-acclaimed architects Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato.
The YN-13 House and Soula House are the very first ground-up residential building projects to come out of the Morris Sato Studio, the internationally-recognized NYC-based husband-and-wife architecture and design firm of Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato. The two adjacent properties include approximately 14,000 square feet and six residential structures total, in addition to two swimming pools.
The 6,000 square-foot YN-13 House specified Follansbee’s TCS Satin for roofing on the main house, guest house and two car garage. The striking two-storied, six-bedroom main house features a pitched roof with a biased cut and protruding corners. The envelope treatment was inspired by the historic structures of Kyoto and Kanazawa, Japan, the bleached-cedar siding of the three structures merge with TCS Satin to form a unified textured appearance between the walls and the roof. The main house, along with the single-storied guest house and garage, form an enclosed courtyard space for the swimming pool and garden, and offer beautiful views of Gardiners Bay.
“We selected TCS Satin for its modern lines, beautiful, weathered aesthetics and sustainable features,” explains Michael Morris. “The satin gray patina finish blends well with the natural scenery of the Hamptons.”
TCS Satin is a stainless steel substrate that is plated with Follansbee’s patented ZT (zinc/tin) Alloy® and is micro-embossed with a low sheen gray patina finish. The material does not require painting and is fully solderable, providing long-lasting joints and durability. The advanced qualities of this product include a non-reflective, textured finish, greater formability, competitive pricing and unprecedented corrosion resistance compared to most roofing materials.
“Follansbee’s TCS Satin combines outstanding performance and beauty to provide an unmatched metal roofing option that cannot be duplicated by other roofing materials,” says Edward Thomas, Follansbee vice president and general manager. “Architects continue to specify TCS Satin for sustainable building projects based on their long-life cycle and reduced environmental impact.”
The material has surpassed 26,750 hours of ASTM salt spray testing with no signs of failure. Given its performance, TCS Satin is especially suitable for highly-corrosive environments, such as coastal regions.
The 7,000 square-foot Soula House features TCS Satin in an exterior wall application and will be completed in fall 2010.
The YN-13 House was completed in fall 2009. Morris Sato Studio, New York City, served as architect with Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato as principals-in-charge and Jorge Salgado as project architect. Legacy Homes Inc., Smithtown, NY, served as general contractor, Metal Service Supply, Pougheepsie, NY, served as distributor and Zorlu Corporation, Cutchogue, NY, served as roofing subcontractor.
