Alucobond® Aluminum Composite Material Adds To High-Tech Appearance

Sharp Grossmont Hospital, La Mesa, CA opened phase one of its new Emergency and Critical Care Center in fall 2004 - "one of the most technologically advanced emergency and intensive care facilities in the nation," according to hospital officials.

The Center is high-tech in appearance, too, with its gleaming exterior cladding of Alucobond® and Alucobond® Plus materials in Champagne Metallic finish. The five-story addition utilized more than 25,000 sq. ft. of the aluminum composite materials (ACM) manufactured by the Benton, KY plant of Alcan Composites USA Inc. The materials were distributed, fabricated and installed by Center Glass Co. of La Mesa, CA, which also handled the glass work at the hospital. The Alucobond materials were attached using the System CGD-2000 dry joint system by Center Glass Co.

Architects for the new addition were The Design Partnership, San Francisco, CA; general contractor was Sundt Construction.

The addition at Sharp Grossmont Hospital included a remodel of the existing hospital to accommodate the new building and modification of the existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Grossmont Hospital opened in 1955. It is now a large and comprehensive health-care facility in East San Diego County, with a service area covering 750 sq. miles. The hospital offers a wide range of varied programs, as well as comprehensive acute care services, and a women's health-care center.

"The $63-million, 165,000-sq.-ft. facility...is the latest example of Sharp Grossmont Hospital's ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and patient-focused care," hospital officials added.

Sharp Grossmont Hospital is part of the not-for-profit Sharp HealthCare organization, which includes four acute care hospitals and three specialty hospitals.
