Follansbee® Provides Roofing to “Green” Celebrity Garden Retreat
Metal roofing in Follansbee’s KlassicKolors® material now tops six buildings at renowned celebrity gardener P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home Retreat near Little Rock, AR. Aesthetically, the vibrant red shade of the roofs contrasts well with the abundant gardens, while functionally the material contributes to the overall durability and sustainability of the Retreat.
Smith, who is best recognized as an award-winning garden designer and host of public television programs P. Allen Smith's Garden Home and P. Allen Smith Gardens, designed the Garden Home Retreat in accordance with his mission of creating “beautiful living spaces that blur the lines between indoors and out.” Frequently contributing to NBC’s Today Show, Smith continues to spread ideas and inspiration year round.
The Retreat’s main cottage, artist studio, outdoor kitchen, tractor barn, milk barn and gate house all feature Follansbee KlassicKolors in Red, lending a signature look to the Retreat. KlassicKolors offers a durable, aesthetically pleasing pre-painted metal roofing option, as it lacks the shiny plastic-coated look common on so many pre-painted metal roofing materials. Working with Valspar® Paint and Coatings, Follansbee was able to create and deliver a pre-painted product that replicates the aesthetic tone, texture and warmth achieved by the tinsmith for nearly 200 years.
“Follansbee is pleased to be involved with a project of this degree,” said Edward Thomas, vice president and general manager of Follansbee. “We were happy to provide our KlassicKolors product in conjunction with the unique and beautiful Retreat.”
Together, Smith and architect Ward Lile built the Retreat as a demonstration site to test and teach lessons in eco-friendly design, sustainable living and good stewardship. Created in the ferme ornée, or ornamental farm style, Follansbee roofing was the best choice for a product that fit with the traditional style of the buildings at the Retreat, while also serving as a durable and eco-friendly option.
Smith chose building materials that would naturally complement each other, ensuring one area flows seamlessly into the next. While he chose the Follansbee product for its intrinsic visual appeal, he says the material’s green, sustainable attributes were eventually the deciding factor in selecting KlassicKolors.
“I have lived in an historic neighborhood for many years and I have grown accustomed to seeing metal roofs and appreciate their beauty and durability,” explains Smith. “When I began researching roofing materials for the main structures at the Garden Home Retreat, I kept coming back to Follansbee. Not only is it guaranteed to last 50 to 100 years, but KlassicKolors is solar reflective, which equals savings on energy costs. This was essential to my decision to make the Garden Home Retreat energy-efficient from top to bottom.”
Smith is eager to demonstrate the effectiveness of Follansbee roofing installed in combination with an under-the-roof-surface solar thermal collection system from Dawn Solar Systems. The products combine to provide the appearance of a traditional-style roof with high-tech performance that lends to the home's energy efficiency. The installations have been documented by Allen’s television and print media crews, and will additionally be included in his television programs, website and magazine features.
The Garden Home Retreat serves as a venue for ongoing public events, like the recently held International Master Gardeners Conference. More than 1,200 people toured the site and witnessed the ways that Follansbee roofing enhances the Retreat’s beauty and sustainability.
KlassicKolors is a pre-painted Terne II zinc/tin coated roofing sheet offered in an extensive palette of designer colors. Its base sheet is coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT® (zinc/tin) alloy and then painted with solar reflective coatings. The ZT alloy provides enhanced durability and extends the life of the metal for many years, even if the painted surface is breached. KlassicKolors is available in a selection of hues, ranging from deep, rich tones of red, blue, green, gray to earth tones of beige, tans and browns. These colors were chosen to maintain the oxide hues that have characterized Terne roofs since Colonial times. Custom formulated colors are also available. A superior, time-tested roofing metal, KlassicKolors carries a warranty of 30 years.
