Metal Mansard Roof Helps Library Blend Into Historical Setting
The new Manhasset Public Library in Manhasset, NY, needed to meet the community’s functional needs of additional space and also their aesthetic requirements. Those requirements included a traditional building in keeping with the size and scale of the surrounding buildings, and also the ability to create a transition between the nearby commercial and residential areas.
“TCS II is a very traditional material and is often specified for historic restorations or those projects requiring a classic look,” explained Edward Thomas, Follansbee vice president and general manager. “The Manhasset Public Library was designed to blend with the style and size of Manhasset. The mansard roof disguises the third story, giving the library the appearance of a two-story building. In addition to helping the library fit neatly into its surroundings, the TCS II roof offers durability and requires little maintenance.”
TCS II was specified as standing seam roof and as the decorative mansard by the project's architect, Burton Behrendt Smith of Bayshore, NY. It was installed by LITSCO (Long Island Tinsmith Suppy Corp.) of Glendale, NY.
The new 38,700 sq. ft. structure replaces the previous 16,500 sq. ft. building and opened in early 2006.
The three-story building, with an additional level underground, compliments the surrounding neighborhoods while adding 50% more shelving room, increased storage space, a new children’s library, a story-hour room, play area and room for parent seating. Other additions include an enlarged community room with seating for 200, quiet study space, a café, and expanded technological capabilities.
TCS II is an architectural stainless steel coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT (zinc/tin) alloy. As a result of Follansbee’s extensive metallurgic research, TCS II does not require painting and is designed to weather naturally to an attractive gray patina and can withstand server corrosive conditions including industrial, coastal, and salt-water environments. Follansbee offers nine preformed profiles for metal roofing, including six standing seam profiles, but the highly versatile TCS II can be tailored into a variety of design forms, from the traditional standing seam roof to a vertical wall, barrel applications, shingles, and customized sections in flat or spherical shapes. TCS II is solderable and virtually maintenance-free.
“TCS II is a highly versatile material,” adds Thomas. “TCS II offers a natural metal aesthetic and the formability and versatility to create any desired shape. This project is a great example of a building design and product working together to achieve the desired result.”
