US Door & Building Components Teams With Local Contractor To Convert Open Canopies Into Enclosed RV And Boat Storage Buildings

Encompassing 1.2 million acres of land and stretching for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry, AZ, to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, Lake Powell and the surrounding Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is considered among the most beautiful places on earth. It attracts more than three million visitors annually, and many who come bring boats, campers and motor homes. Not surprisingly, the demand for space to store recreational vehicles and watercraft locally is high. Among the businesses catering to that need is Lake Powell Boat and RV.

Located in Page, AZ, Lake Powell Boat and RV recently contracted with U.S. Door and Building Components of Orlando, FL, to convert a trio of open-sided canopy structures into fully enclosed, premium storage buildings. Partnering with U.S. Door to complete the project was Caliber Metal Buildings.

In addition to being open, the original 80’ x 40’ canopies had AB-grade gravel flooring. Before beginning the project, the owner poured 4”-thick concrete slab as a base for the buildings. In addition to keeping the interiors relatively clean, each of the slabs features a 1/2”-high rain lip that keeps water from seeping under the door during periods of inclement weather.

There was an economical advantage to turning the existing canopies into enclosed buildings, but the new walls, doors and partitions had to fit correctly for the project to be successful. To that end, U.S. Door field measured each of the structures prior to fabricating the roll-up door openings, structural jambs and headers, unit partitions, building corners and trim pieces that would be necessary to complete the job. Those items were then installed by Caliber Metal Buildings, using a scissor lift for speed and safety. From start to finish, the erection process took just two weeks.

“A quick installation time was important to our customer” said Rob Finelli of Caliber. “Creating the least amount of inconvenience to existing storage customers was a goal from the time we arrived until the job was completed”.

Though the buildings are like-sized, each is different in terms of space configuration. Their layout included the creation of 16 new storage units. Building 6 is split into 13 bays, Building 7 into 13 and Building 9 into 8. Buildings 6 and 7 can store vehicles and boats up to 10’6” wide by 35’ in length. Building 9 can hold items up to 13’6” feet wide by 35’ feet long. The interior height of the buildings is over 15’ high. Each building features horizontal partitions with full height studs, providing extra security for customers and added support for the building structure.

In addition to designing the building enclosure, U.S. Door manufactured the roll-up doors, the trim for eaves and door openings, partition walls and metal studs. The custom-folded trim for the eaves and openings was produced using U.S. Door’s computer-aided folding machines to create accurately made parts quickly.

Two U.S. Door models were used in the door openings. For the smaller openings on the self-storage units the owner chose the Model 501 roll-up doors. For the larger openings, the Model 652 doors were specified for their ability to resist high winds and have the additional security of wind locks to provide a secure fit. Model 652 doors also feature nylon wind locks creating a quieter, smoother operation and easier installation than other types of wind load doors.

The new buildings are a Lightstone Tan color with a Patriot Red trim and doors, matching existing buildings already on the site.
