Aluminum Wall Panels Create Accent Band On Modern Home In Oregon

Mark Kewley designed his 2,750 sq. ft. house in Portland, Ore., to be a modern creation. He wanted the four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom layout to have clean lines, while emphasizing livability with sustainable materials incorporated throughout.

Metal wall panels played a key role in bringing clean lines to the home, as Kewley used them to create an accent band around the house. Metafor (MFP120) wall panels from ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa., were selected because Kewley liked the small profile - in fact, they were the smallest profile he could find. Approximately 770 sq. ft. of the 0.040-aluminum Metafor panels, in a Champagne color, were installed.

“The siding creates a lot of the visual interest and modern appeal,” Kewley explained. “The metallic quality adds a ‘bling’ element.”

The top floor of the home contains a guest apartment, which Kewley designed to feel like a private tree house retreat; that bedroom opens onto a large roof deck. The top floor also features the front entry, which is accessed by a bridge from the road. The middle floor contains bedrooms and the main family entrance, as well as the garage. The bottom floor is the main living space; it has a large kitchen with a semi-circular shaped island/sitting area, sunk-in living room and a dining room that opens to the outdoors with two sets of double doors.

Daylighting was incorporated throughout the home with 40 windows, a light shaft and several light wells. In addition to the aluminum wall panels, other green materials include: bamboo floors throughout and recycled oak strip flooring in the kitchen, and Forest Certified lumber.

Schaefer Siding of Gresham, Ore., installed the ATAS panels, and James Frank Construction, based in Portland, served as general contractor.
