Curved Panel Rotunda Lends “Grain Bin” Image To New Iowa Soybean Association Headquarters

When SVPA Architects Inc. of West Des Moines, Iowa started to plan a new headquarters facility for the Iowa Soybean Association, the client wanted a building that would speak to their farming membership. According to Bob Ormsby of SVPA, “The design team and the client simultaneously came up with the idea of incorporating the image of a grain bin as a major design element to reflect the agricultural function of the organization. The use of silver-colored corrugated panels, manufactured by Morin West (a Kingspan Group company) and custom-curved by Curveline Inc., enabled us to carry out the grain-bin theme in an aesthetically appropriate manner,” he notes.

The panel selected for the job was a simple 7/8” corrugated Morin wall panel of 22 GA steel. “The ‘grain bin’ is actually a 30-ft high open rotunda that connects the building’s two levels of office space,” says Ormsby. “We designed the panels to be installed with horizontal metal bands to add visual interest and break up the field of the corrugated wall system.”

The metal rotunda curves around a stone façade entranceway while accommodating large window treatments above the main doors and smaller windows in alternating bands. Panels had to be produced in eight different lengths (from 5'-6” up to 21') and curved into eight different degrees of curvature, all with a consistent 19'-4-5/8” radius, to meet design requirements. Curveline performed the custom curving at its Ontario, California service center and shipped the panels to Iowa for onsite erection. The panel finish is a Valspar® Fluropon® PVDF Kynar 500 coating.

The Baker Group of Des Moines, Iowa performed the panel installation. Project manager Jeff Hawkins reports: “The biggest challenge was to get everything aligned properly. There were many different length panels that had to be side-lapped, and we had to carefully align everything all the way up the 30' height of the structure and around the window elevations.” The curved panels were attached to Z-girts with insulation around the metal studs and Tyvek® wrap all the way around for water-tightness. As an additional step, they flashed the entire system to ensure proper water drainage.

Construction of the new Iowa Soybean Association headquarters building in Ankeny, Iowa was completed in August 2009. The 30,000 sq ft facility includes two stories of office space, a basement level for storage, fitness center, two-level lobby rotunda and a large board room. General contractor for the project was The Weitz Company, Des Moines, Iowa.

About Curveline

Curveline_logoIn 1985, Curveline brought a patented crimp-curving technology from Europe to the U.S. and established a panel-curving service center in Ontario, California. Since then, Curveline has offered maximum design flexibility due to curving technology which is not linked to a single product line. Using the Curveline profile list, architects and specifiers may source panels from manufacturers in 100+ factory locations and specify desired angle and radius of curvature, including simple, complex and multi-radius curves.
