Crimp-Curved Metal Roof Panels Top Arizona Park's Newest Shelters

A City of Glendale, Arizona community park, located at 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, utilizes a series of curved-roof ramadas (shelters) to provide shade and comfort to park visitors.

The project includes one triangle kiosk and 15 Colorado model shelters in two different sizes (25’ x 34’5” and 30’ x 42’), fabricated by Classic Recreation Systems Inc. using panels supplied by AEP Span and custom-curved by Curveline, Inc. Olsson Associates of Phoenix, AZ, was the designer/landscape architect. All components were pre-fabricated by Classic Recreation and erected onsite by Recon Construction of Phoenix.

The layout of the shelters consists of two concentric circles, with the smaller shelters in the center and the larger ones in the outer circle. The beautiful facility, hailed as a “gem of the valley”, is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 people at one time, with the smaller structures featuring built-in barbeques with counters, benches and raised planters.  Each structure has two 12”-diameter columns supporting curved rafters and tail lattice beams.

According to Jeff Kratzke, a vice president with Olsson Associates: “In our original design concept for this 88-acre site, we themed the project so that every element would be influenced by the movement of water. The shade ramadas are a continuation of this theme. The contoured metal roofs that cover the ramadas, with their bright blue crimp-curved panels, mimic the look of rippling water. Metal was the material of choice because of its durability in the harsh desert environment, and also because of its ability to be manipulated into the desired shape using the Curveline process.”

The project uses about 16,902 sq ft of curved HR-36 24-GA steel panels in a DuraTech® ENERGY STAR® cool roof finish, color Tahoe Blue. Construction was completed March 2009.

About Curveline

Curveline_logoIn 1985, Curveline brought a patented crimp-curving technology from Europe to the U.S. and established a panel-curving service center in Ontario, California. Since then, Curveline has offered maximum design flexibility due to curving technology which is not linked to a single product line. Using the Curveline profile list, architects and specifiers may source panels from manufacturers in 100+ factory locations and specify desired angle and radius of curvature, including simple, complex and multi-radius curves.
