Follansbee® Contributes To Washington, DC Restaurant LEED® Gold Certification
Follansbee® TCS II® Terne-Coated Stainless Steel now uniquely adorns an interior stairwell and upper level at the LEED® Gold Certified Founding Farmers restaurant in Washington, D.C.
As part of a new construction buildout, Follansbee TCS II was installed as interior cladding, creating a traditional feel that blends well with the restaurant’s farmhouse atmosphere. While aesthetics were a key component of the design, sustainability was equally important in line with the restaurant’s eco-friendly goals.
TCS II, with its high degree of recycled content and minimal maintenance requirements, lends both sustainable attributes and visual interest to the eatery’s interior. Additional green building materials include reclaimed woods, post-consumer content fabrics, poured concrete bar tops and low-VOC paints, all of which contributed to the facility’s LEED Gold Certification – a first LEED certification of any type for a restaurant in the District of Columbia, and the first Upscale-Casual, Full-Service restaurant in the U.S. to receive the Gold level status.
“The design concept was to deconstruct the classic barn using materials commonly used in barn vernacular,” said Peter Hapstak III, AIA, IIDA principal of CORE architecture + design. “The steel cladding was a successful material because it is nice looking, durable and sustainable.”
“We are extremely pleased to be a part of such an environmentally-friendly project,” says Edward Thomas, Follansbee vice president and general manager. “The look, durability and sustainable attributes of Follansbee metal products make them a unique choice for a variety of applications, including interiors.”
Renovation efforts were completed in Summer 2008. In addition to CORE architecture + design as the project architect, Bradco Supply, Hyattsville, MD, served as distributor while Phoenix Wood Products Corp, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, handled the metal cladding installation.
Follansbee TCS II, an architectural stainless steel coated with Follansbee's patented ZT® (zinc/tin) alloy, weathers naturally to an attractive gray patina and does not require painting. The highly versatile TCS II can be tailored to a variety of design forms – from the traditional standing seam roof to vertical walls, barrel applications, shingles and customized sections in flat or spherical shapes. TCS II is solderable and virtually maintenance-free.
As Washington, DC’s Greenest Restaurant, Founding Farmers presents a broad array of menu items, with entrée options sourced from sustainable producers from across the country and regionally. The restaurant’s culinary philosophy parallels the building’s green design: “We believe it is the right of all diners and lovers of a green ‘meal away from home’ to enjoy an exquisite, fulfilling and honest meal.” Learn more at www.WeAreFoundingFarmers.com.
