Follansbee® TCS II® Lends Renewed Look to Mountain Residence

The private summer residence of Tomas and Meg Bergstrand, located in Keene Valley, NY, has joined an ever-growing list of single-family homes to be topped with Follansbee® TCS II® metal roofing.

The Bergstrands––who made the decision to expand and renovate their summer residence in the spring of 2006––desired a sustainable roofing material that would meet their green building and design goals. The home’s location in the Adirondack Mountains additionally dictated the need for an attractive, durable new roofing material that would withstand heavy amounts of snow and ice, while holding up against bitter cold mountain temperatures. Follansbee TCS II terne-coated stainless, which features a variety of weather-resistant, green and energy-saving attributes, easily met their requirements.

“The homeowners desired a natural aesthetic that would blend well with the landscape of the Adirondack Mountains,” explains Anne Snelling-Lee. The project’s architect, Snelling-Lee was familiar with Follansbee roofing and had used it in the past. “The decision to choose a Follansbee TCS II roof was based on reduced life-cycle costs and environmental impact. The terne roof’s natural aesthetic was equally pleasing.”

The material’s quality, extended warranty and unique visual appeal also contributed to their decision.

“We did plenty of research into the longevity of a variety of roofs,” explains homeowner Meg Bergstrand. “We chose Follansbee TCS II after learning that a metal roof maintains a much longer life-cycle than others. We were additionally pleased with the soft, satin gray look of the TCS II material, which contrasts nicely with our home’s copper coloring.”

Because the home has remained in the family for multiple generations, the Bergstrands were equally impressed by TCS II’s long life-cycle, which should ensure that the home’s roofing material continues to last for generations to come. To date, the terne-coated stainless material has surpassed 25,000 hours of ASTM salt spray testing. Competitive products can fail at 2,000 hours.

“Our patented ZT® Alloy is one of the keys to the durability and longevity of our roofs,” explains Edward Thomas, Follansbee vice president and general manager. “We have employed years of independent testing to produce an alloy that could shield our roofs in any environment, including harsh corrosive conditions. A product like TCS II creates the much desired combination of beauty and durability.”

“We are very pleased with the final result,” continues Bergstrand. “The Follansbee brand was recommended to us by our architect. We continue to receive compliments on the roof.”

Construction on the $1.5 million renovation project began in summer 2007 and was completed in January 2008. Celtic Roofing of Burlington, VT was responsible for installing the TCS II standing seam roof. Scott McClelland, Keane Valley, NY, served as general contractor, while Anne E. Snelling-Lee Architects, Boston, MA served as architect.

TCS II is an architectural stainless steel coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT (zinc/tin) alloy. ZT alloy is an electrochemically-bonded coating of tin and zinc applied uniformly to both sides of Type 304 stainless steel, making it extremely resistant to chemicals and environmental stress.

Follansbee TCS II can be installed on residences as well as industrial, commercial and institutional structures, and is often specified for historic renovations because of its classic, traditional look. Homeowners are invited to learn more at www.MyBestRoof.com
