Houston, TX - Houston-based pre-engineered metal building manufacturer, Whirlwind Steel Buildings, Inc., has announced, in conjunction with its other divisions, Whirlwind Building Components and Whirlwind Solar, the launch of a solar kits website for solar-over-metal-roof-system applications.
In addition to providing pre-designed "peel and stick" solar laminate systems, Whirlwind Solar is now offering traditional crystalline “Bolt Down” solar modules. Whirlwind uses an attachment method specifically designed to cost effectively attach PV modules to metal roof systems. The kits include the bulk of the solar related equipment and are specially designed for metal platforms. Whirlwind Solar Kits typically include PV Modules, Inverter(s), combiner boxes, DC Fuses, DC wire whips, lightning arrestors, warning labels, DC and AC disconnects one line electrical diagrams, and installation manuals.
The approach, geared towards the pre-engineered metal building industry and architectural metal roof systems industry, creates a seamless approach to using solar on weathertight metal roof systems.
According to Fred Reardon, operations manager for Whirlwind Solar, "We have 59 pre-designed systems. If the building owner stays within the confines of the system, they can benefit from a cost effective, pre-designed system that is penetration free. Typically a good local certified electrician, with some Direct Current (DC) experience, can install the pre-designed systems. Some areas require certain solar installer certifications as well.
More and more businesses are using the Whirlwind Solar over metal roofs approach. The Whirlwind Solar Kits approach is an example of how renewable energy technologies are reaching non-traditional platforms like metal buildings.
The “Made in USA” systems are "Grid Tied" systems which means that if the solar array is creating more electricity than the building inhabitants are using, clean generated electricity can be put on the grid.
